Dr. Sebastian Schmidt is a German Patent Attorney and Founder of the Patent Law Firm Quantum IP. Trained as a Theoretical Physicist he shares a nerdish passion for emerging technologies ranging from quantum & neuromorphic computing to cutting-edge semiconductor and mobile communication technology.
Prior to his career in IP, Sebastian obtained a PhD in Nano-physics from Yale University, USA, and has been a group leader in the field of Quantum Technologies at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. His proposal of a quantum simulator based on superconducting electronic circuits has been realised experimentally in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University. Together with IBM Research in Switzerland he developed a prototype quantum computer suitable for AI and machine learning applications.
Since 2018 Sebastian devotes his in-depth technical expertise to help start-ups, research institutions, KMUs as well as fortune-500 companies to protect their innovations before the German and European Patent Office. He has extensive experience in the protection of software and computer-implemented inventions and developed an expertise related to standard essential patents (SEPs) with interest in FRAND related IP commercialisation projects.
